Managed to avoid all things Cupid-related so far this month? Thought so. It appears that the high street is completely loved up when it comes to Valentine’s Day this Wednesday.
For couples, it’s a chance to make a sweeping romantic gesture, dine out somewhere swanky or perhaps even pop the question. But for us single ladies, chances are, you’d rather pop any heart-shaped balloon in sight…
The beauty of being single on 14th February is that you can spend the day however you like, without the pressure of having to impress anyone but yourself.
So, rather than shirk away from the occasion and complain about how commercialised the day has become, why not use it as an opportunity for some quality me-time? To help you do just that, we’ve pulled together a list of alternative ways to spend Valentine’s Day in Newcastle and celebrate your single status, whether on your own or with your girl friends. No beau required!
Cake at Mason + Rye
Indulge in your love for all things sweet and sugary with a slab of cake from the lovely Mason + Rye in Fenwick. The bakery-come-patisserie-café is open until 8pm on Wednesday and has one of the most scrumptious selections of cakes and treats in the city which look almost too pretty to eat – with everything from devil’s fool and classic Victoria sponge to orange polenta, macaroons and chocolate eclairs.
Urban Decay make-up masterclass
If you’re looking to freshen up your beauty routine this spring, then make a date with a masterclass from Urban Decay in Debenhams in intu Eldon Square. It’s actually Valentine’s themed and features the striking make-up collection from UD’s newest muse, cruelty-free beauty influencer Kristen Leanne, but the tips and tricks are certain to come in handy when experimenting with your next date night make-up look.
Cocktails at Las Iguanas
Jump on board this year’s ‘galentine’s’ vibe and round up all your single gal pals and head to Las Iguanas on Grey Street or the Quayside. Sip your way through the restaurant and bar’s extensive 2-4-1 cocktail menu, with luscious creations like the Pear Drop Caipirinha, Malibu Swizzle and Rum Julep, priced from just £8.75.
Dance class at Dance City
Do you ever watch Strictly and feel inspired and energised to take up a dance class in the New Year, but never quite get round to it? Well, now’s your chance! Dance City runs classes throughout the week, dabbling in every style of dance you can imagine. And what’s great is that you can take up many of these classes at any point during the term, without having to commit to a full block of sessions. This Wednesday you can get your groove on to Egyptian belly dance or street.
Movie night at Newcastle Castle
Ok, so we have to confess; this is a full-on romantic Valentine’s Day event hosted by Newcastle Castle, but the opportunity to enjoy a candlelit tour of the Castle Keep is just too good to miss! So, grab your bestie and get set for a girly catch up like no other as you enjoy a buffet and drinks alongside a screening of rom-com classic, Shakespeare In Love. This is rounded off by a late night tour of the venue, finishing up on the castle’s roof; just imagine those city views – and Instagram pics!
Stay cosy indoors…
Of course, you might prefer to just stay at home and treat it like any other day of the week and that’s ok, too.
If anything, it’s the perfect excuse to treat yourself to some nice M&S food, a bubble bath with those luxury bath-time treats from Santa, or even a rendez-vous with you current boxset crush. And what could be more irresistible than that?
