Since going into lockdown, our day-to-day routines have turned upside down.
Whether it’s setting your alarm for a different time (oh hey there, longer sleeps!), saying goodbye to your wardrobe and discovering that you do actually own what the cool Instagrammers now call ‘loungewear’, or going completely makeup free – we’re all adapting to our new life behind closed doors.
For me, clutching onto a few fragments from my pre-lockdown routine is helping to keep a sense of normality in my life and boost my mindset during these anxious times. I’m also indulging in small luxuries along the way to make my never-ending dose of ‘me time’ that little bit more bearable.
Today, I’m highlighting 11 things currently working for me that might just brighten your day and outlook, too. Hope this list helps!
Spritz your favourite perfume. This reminds me of my pre-WFH morning routine and, mentally, sets me up for the day ahead.
Wear mascara. It’s the one beauty product I couldn’t live without if I was on a desert island. It makes me look and feel more awake. And in this new era of virtual chatting, it also makes me a touch more presentable for those Zoom and Houseparty calls.
Apply some lippy. Some days, I’ll wear a pale pink or nude lipstick. I instantly feel less drab, and more like the ‘let’s see what the world throws at me today’ version of myself.
Embrace your natural hair. I’ve been leaving my hair to dry naturally and have said hello again to my wavy, voluminous tresses. I love being fluster-free from ditching the heat styling, and I’m pretty sure my hair will thank me for it too.
Wear pretty lingerie. I’m talking about the sumptuous matching sets hidden at the bottom of your drawer, underneath all your everyday t-shirt bras and plain cotton knickers. Fashion psychologists say that sexy underwear can enhance your mood and self-confidence, so I’m not going to disagree!
Switch up your outfits. My hoodies and joggers may be super comfy and what I wear 99% of the time, but occasionally I like to wear something different, like an oversized tee or jumper dress paired with cosy knee high socks. A style that’s almost good enough for the ‘gram…
Wear a fancy hair clip. I have SO many hair accessories, including Blair Waldorf-style headbands, decorative hairgrips and funky bobbles. I’ve been playing around with these over the past few weeks and may even transition them into my post-lockdown look.
Replace your commute with dancing. It goes without saying, we’re physically moving less now that we’re house-bound. A really simple way to stay active throughout the day is to dance when you would usually be commuting to or from work. For me, that means swapping the Metro for a few shapes around my kitchen while making my breakfast, or dancing to the radio after switching off my laptop.
Pamper yourself. From bath soaks and face masks to deep conditioning hair treatments and sugar scrubs – in the evenings, I’ve been using unopened pressies and spontaneous beauty purchases I’ve had stashed away for what feels like forever.
Light a candle. I love scented candles as they create such a calming ambience – something we could all do with at the moment. Candlelit bubble baths are my fave for an ultra serene, relaxing experience.
Curate different playlists. Working, chilling, exercising, cooking, showering, cleaning…I have a soundtrack for different activities around the house to help lift my mood. As tempting as it may be to play my favourite album on loop, the last thing I want is to forever associate it with the Coronavirus!
Until next time,
