Dayne Henderson is a designer from the north of England who was recently commissioned by eccentric style chameleon Lady Gaga to create garments for her current ArtRAVE world tour.
It’s quite an accomplishment considering Dayne only set up his design business in 2013. But thanks to nothing more than a Twitter conversation, Dayne’s octopus-style latex couture headpieces are now part of Gaga’s show-stopping tour wardrobe.
We catch up with Dayne ahead of his stint at Fashion Front Row – one of the highlights to NE1’s Newcastle Fashion Week, where he’ll be showcasing his iconic creations…
Where do you look to for inspiration for your designs?
I think, like most designers, inspiration can hit at any time, with any trigger. I take a lot of inspiration from the ‘clubkid’ movement and the late Leigh Bowery – a performance artist/designer. There has been a big resurgence over the past few years of this concept and as a result some of the people out there are next level crazy! I love that, I think fashion can be so serious at times.
What attracted you to specialising in latex couture?
I have always drawn to the form of the body so the idea of using a fabric that was essentially a second skin seemed like a natural medium for me. I also really enjoy the construction process involved.
Who’s your style icon and why?
Leigh Bowery – he was a true genius in the way he used fabric and manipulated the body/silhouette. He essentially was a living art piece using his body as a canvas and fabrics as a medium.
Lady Gaga is quite a coup so early on in your career – who would you love to dress next?
Crazy right, it’s been an honour working for Lady Gaga and her team! So many people…Brooke Candy, who I’ve been a fan of for some time and has recently stamped her mark when it comes to ‘freaky fashion’ in her new video. Honestly though, I’m happy to dress anyone. It’s humbling that anyone likes my work; I’d put just as much effort into the average Joe as I would a celebrity or artist.
